Cost of Attendance 2016-17 at Four-Year Institutions


New data from the National Center on Education Statistics illustrate the current cost of attending a four-year university in the United States. As illustated below, the average tuition and fee charges at public, four-year institutions was $8,173 for in-state students and $18,415 for out-of-state students in 2016-17. Charges at four-year not-for-profit institutions was $27,276 and $16,011 at private, for profit four-year institutions. Room and board charges hovered around the $10,000 mark regardless of institution type or sector, and approximated the cost even if not living on campus.

Total cost of attendance for in-state, public four-year students was $22,603, compared to $32,845 for out-of-state students and $41,458 for students attending private, not-for-profit institutions.
